A Ratio Table for Scaling Recipes Without Guesswork
Use servings, ingredient quantities, and units to practise proportional reasoning with a result that can be checked.
Scaling a recipe is a practical ratio problem. The arithmetic may be simple, but the setup requires the same habits used in many quantitative-reasoning questions: identify the target, preserve a relationship, convert units carefully, and check whether the result has a sensible size.
Write the original relationship
Begin with the number of servings and one ingredient quantity. A recipe that uses 300 grams of flour for six servings creates a ratio of 300 grams to six servings. Keep the units attached to both values.
Find the scale factor
Divide the desired servings by the original servings. To change six servings into nine, the scale factor is 9 ÷ 6, or 1.5. Multiply every ingredient by the same factor. Changing only selected ingredients breaks the recipe’s proportions.

The table makes the invariant visible: flour per serving remains 50 grams. It also provides several equivalent ways to verify the result.
Convert units in a separate step
Scale first, then convert, or convert first and scale—but keep the two operations on separate lines. Write conversion factors so unwanted units cancel. Avoid switching casually between weight and volume, because ingredients with different densities do not share one universal conversion.
Check the direction
If servings increase, every proportional ingredient should increase. If the recipe is halved, the quantities should be smaller. Estimate before calculating so a misplaced decimal is easier to notice.
Turn the kitchen example into transfer
Create new questions: solve for servings when an ingredient amount is known, compare two batch sizes, or determine the percentage increase. Then explain which relationship stayed constant.
